Join us!
We are always looking for talented and motivated people to join our group. We currently have the following projects available:
Single impurity in a dipolar Bose-Einstein Condensate
A single impurity interacting with a quantum bath is a simple (to state) yet rich many-body paradigm that is relevant across a wide sweep of fields from condensed matter physics to quantum information theory to particle physics. The aim of this project is to experimentally explore this physics using the highly controllable platform of a ultracold bath of Erbium atoms in which potassium impurities can be imbedded. The special feature of Erbium atoms is their large magnetic dipole moments which result in long-range and anisotropic dipole-dipole interactions in addition to the short-range contact interactions more normally seen in cold atom systems. This opens new avenues in a range of topics from polaron physics to information flow in open quantum systems.
Those interested should contact the Group Leader, Dr Robert Smith at robert.smith (at) physics.ox.ac.uk and should have a look at the Department's website.
Study fundamental quantum physics with ultracold dipolar atoms
Are you interested in gaining hands-on experience in a state-of-the-art quantum physics experiment? Join our lab and become part of a cutting-edge research project investigating the fundamental quantum many-body dynamics of an ultracold Erbium-Potassium mixture.
As a master's student, you will work directly on a complex experimental platform and develop valuable skills that will prepare you for future careers in both academia and industry. Since our experiment is continuously evolving, there are many opportunities to contribute to the development and improvement of the apparatus.
Example of past projects:
- Designing and building optical setups (e.g. optical cavity, beam shaping with SLM, ...)
- Designing and implementing high-resolution imaging optics
- Developing electronics for laser frequency stabilisation
- Programming laser intensity stabilisation and control systems
- Analysing and interpreting experimental data
The exact project will depend on the current priorities of the experi
ment, as well as your individual interests, background, and skills. We will work with you to define a project that is both scientifically meaningful and aligned with your goals.
If you are interested in joining the group, please contact Dr. Robert Smith or Lauritz Klaus.
Your first steps into quantum science
Are you curious about how quantum systems can be studied experimentally and interested in gaining hands-on experience with advanced optical and quantum technologies?
The field of ultracold quantum gases is at the forefront of modern physics, enabling discoveries in quantum many-body science and providing powerful platforms for quantum computing, simulation, and sensing. By joining our group, you will gain practical experience working with state-of-the-art optical systems, electronics, laser control, and experimental automation.
Whether you are looking for a short internship, a research project, or a longer-term involvement in the lab, we offer opportunities to contribute to a cutting-edge quantum experiment while developing valuable scientific and technical skills.
We regularly host student interns and participate in programmes such as UNIQ+. If you are interested, feel free to contact us to inquire about currently available positions.
